When Entrepreneurs Set Company Policies
Most entrepreneurs have only enough time to think about the future and strategies to keep their businesses ahead of the game in the future. Some are consumed with keeping things tight, and not allowing much freedom of thought for their staff.
Setting up policies that limit employees working elsewhere, stops them from thinking outside the box, or denying them the ability to start another business can limit the growth of the entire venture.
While I understand how entrepreneurs feel about their business — it is their idea and livelihood, after all — when you feel you have to have or be a “taskmaster” in order to accomplish what needs to be done, it is important that the policies not be “taskmaster” focused. As an entrepreneur you need things done, not people to argue with you.
Strong entrepreneurs encourage their staff to do different things, to spin off new companies, because they know the more ventures there are in the ecosystem, the more business everyone will have.
One of the key things is to unleash the potential talent your staff may have, by setting up policies that liberate — rather than limit — them to think beyond the boundaries you have created.
